About

Whosoever is where I write about Scripture, and about a God who keeps turning out to be kinder than anyone expected.

Tom Hartley seated in a leather armchair, wearing a flat cap, lit by hard sunlight against a concrete wall

Most of what is here started as a question I could not put down — a familiar verse that stopped sounding familiar, a word in the Greek that turned out to mean something warmer than the English lets on, a promise I had read a hundred times without ever letting it land.

I am not writing to settle arguments. I am writing for the person who suspects there is more grace in this than they have been shown, and who would like to go and look.

What is here

  • Christian Living — the ordinary week, and what faith actually asks of it.
  • Joy — a ten-part study of the most underrated word in the New Testament.
  • Righteousness — five parts on being made right, rather than getting it right.
  • Power — grace, faith and forgiveness, and what they are strong enough to do.

The books

There are two, with more on the way. You can see both on the books page.

Reading along

New writing goes up here first. The whole archive lives on the front page, and every piece is filed under one of the four subjects above.
