Have You Heard?

There is a secret which has been so successful and destructive throughout time, that Satan doesn’t want you to know about it. A secret so powerful that it has brought down angels and destroyed countless lives throughout the centuries. Yet, nothing (I REPEAT NOTHING) can keep us from the love of God (Romans 8:39).

There is a secret which has been so successful and destructive throughout time, that Satan doesn’t want you to know about it. A secret so powerful that it has brought down angels and destroyed countless lives throughout the centuries. Today, it is the source behind everything from bullying to teen suicide; from the drop in education rates to the rise in crime and imprisonment, and much more. It destroys the fabric of families, friendships, business dealings and international relations. And it’s all comes down to one thing; one lie that Satan doesn’t want you to know about. His hope is to continue to keep people from knowing it, but I want to reveal it to you today.

When it comes down to what is truly important in our relationships with God and each another, there is just ONE LIE that has the power to keep us from enjoying our lives to the fullest. And that lie is, GOD DOESN’T LOVE YOU!
You say, “That’s it? It’s so simple.” Yet it’s the ultimate destroyer. Satan wants you to believe that God doesn’t love YOU. That YOU aren’t worthy of HIS LOVE. Satan knows this isn’t true; he knows the Scriptures, “For God so LOVED the world that HE gave HIS only begotten SON, so that WHOSOEVER believeth in HIM should not perish, but have EVERLASTING LIFE.” That IS God’s Word. It’s not just a verse from one of the Gospels, it is TRUTH.

But, Satan can’t confront God’s LOVE for us directly, because, he already tried that on Jesus, and it didn’t work and he knows it. He went straight to THE ONE and tried to trick him. He can’t even misquote it to a believer because we have something more powerful against it than a two edged sword- God’s Word. We can go to the Scriptures and see for ourselves that our HEAVENLY FATHER LOVES US. So, how does he trick us? Let me tell you two stories.

When I was a young boy (as early as I can remember), my father would spend time with me playfully holding me down and whispering in my ear because it tickled and made me laugh. But, he would whisper, “You’re a bum. Nothing but a bum, and you’ll always be a bum.” That was all. Over and over again, “You’re a bum.” Looking back on it, it doesn’t make sense that he would say something like that to me. What loving father would say that to his child? BUT Satan knew that my Heavenly Father had a destiny for me and the impact that it had on me was subtly destructive and it followed me well into adulthood. I did everything I could subconsciously to avoid happiness, because, well, I was a bum and nothing good was destined for me. In my youth, I believed that my earthly father loved me and that he wouldn’t lie to me. If he said something to me at such a young age, it HAD to be true. I would always be a bum, nothing but a bum and nothing good should happen to me, and every good thing that came my way confused and scared me and I did all that I could to avoid it or drive it away.

There are countless friendships, relationships, jobs, and other wonderful gifts that my HEAVENLY FATHER gave to me to show his LOVE for me and I destroyed many of them because of a lie; a small seed planted at an early age. I’ve hurt people and allowed myself to be hurt by people because I believed I was destined to be a failure. Even as I write this, the Attacker comes. “No one will read this. No one will care. You’ll be thought a fool for writing this. No one will believe it.” The enemy never truly goes away (Luke 4:13 referring to the temptation of Jesus’, “And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.” emphasis mine, and later, “But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, “Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.” Mark 8:33).

I was working at a small inner-city ministry. One day a police officer came by to speak with me. As he did, four young boys from the neighbourhood walked past us. He acknowledged three of them as brothers and said to me, “What are they doing here? You know they are troublemakers. They’ll never amount to anything.” Immediately I was filled with rage. “Who are you to say that?! You don’t know anything about those boys!” These boys came from a household and an environment that, if seen from eyes below, accepted those words. But, God sees the goodness in us that sometimes we cannot see even ourselves.

So, how does Satan work? How does he accomplish so much destruction, and how do we fight back? Satan works on keeping our focus off of the LOVE of God by focusing on things below and not things above. “You’re a bum.”, “You’ll never amount to anything.”,”You’re ugly.”,”You’re stupid.”,”You’re worthless.”,”You’re fat.” You’re this or that something which is unacceptable to everyone. The examples are endless. If he can get us to believe these lies, we will not focus on or believe that GOD cares or even exists. He will try to keep us from knowing and accepting the unconditional LOVE God has for us. He will turn us on one another and rejoice in our pain and deaths.

Yet, nothing (I REPEAT NOTHING) can keep us from the love of God (Romans 8:39). I know that if I can save one person from committing suicide or a crime against another because of a lie; keep a bully from harming someone with their words, than I have done some good. I know that I am a child of God, “fearfully and wonderfully made.” Psalm 139:14 and so are you. We need to confront Satan at every turn. Let everything that comes from you be edifying. Seek out the opportunity to show someone who you find under this conviction the TRUE LOVE OF GOD. Tell them that they have a LOVING HEAVENLY FATHER. That HE has sent you to bring light into the darkness.

It pains me every time I hear of some young person who has committed suicide because they were bullied or belittled or otherwise had their focus turned away from God. If you know of someone who needs to be reminded of God’s LOVE, won’t you help them? I will be expanding on this topic because I feel so strongly about it. If you need me to come and speak to your congregation, please contact me. Together, we can push back the darkness. YOU ARE THE POWERHOUSE OF GOD.
